Delhi Metro to Introduce 6-Coach Trains
It is also adding more trains on the Gurgaon line, which witnessed a serious technical glitch last week. Raj Kumar, Director (Operations), Delhi Metro, said the much-awaited six-coach trains will be introduced in a month's time on the Line 3 (Dwarka Sec 21-Noida City Centre), which sees a footfall of over six lakh on a weekday.
"The six-coach trains will be in place in a month's time. First it will be introduced on Line 3 and subsequently six coach trains will also come up on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri- Gurgaon)," he said. The six-coach trains will be a big relief for commuters, especially after one coach was reserved exclusively for women on all Metro trains. Over-crowding is a major problem in Metro, especially during evening and morning rush hours. As part of its efforts to increase the efficiency of trains on the Line 2, more trains are being converted to the Automatic Train Operation mode.
The Line 2 carries almost 7 lakh passengers a day and the Delhi Metro has added three more trains on the line taking the number of trains to 45, Kumar said. "Two more trains will be added within a month. On Line 2, more and more trains are being converted to the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode from the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode to increase their efficiency. "At present, 17 trains are running on ATO on this corridor and the remaining trains will also be converted to ATO in the next four to five months," he said.
The Gurgaon line witnessed the worst-ever technical glitch last week when train services on the line were disrupted for over four hours during the evening peak hours after the Over-Head Electrification (OHE) system failed. After the incident, DMRC chief E Sreedharan appointed a high-level committee to go into the incident and suggest steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Delhi Metro has also sought engineers and experts from Switzerland to look into the technical glitches.
Commenting on the frequent problems on OHE, Kumar said the DMRC draws power from nine substations at Kashmere Gate, New Delhi, Jahangirpuri, Indraprastha, Botanical Garden, Sarita Vihar, Chattarpur, HUDA City Centre and Mundka.
